Even When I Don't See, I Believe

Updated: Sep 2

Faith isn't about Seeing... It's about Trusting the One Who Sees Everything... The One Who Sees You.

Have you ever felt like your prayers are hitting a ceiling?

Like you're moving forward lost in the dark, slowly feeling your way?

Have you felt distant, alone, like you're doing it all on your own... and failing?

Some days life feels easy. Other days it feels like you are walking through fog... your steps uncertain, your heart heavy with doubt.

You are not alone... literally you are not alone.

We all have days where we find ourselves in a funk. We feel like something is missing. Maybe we feel distant from God. Maybe we're working hard towards a goal, an inspired direction, but the results just aren't happening. We all have days where doubt, distraction, and discouragement seem to be pounding at our door. We all have days when our heart feels heavy.

I had one of those days recently. It seemed like nothing was working right, I wasn't being as effective as I could be. I was out of rhythm. I needed a pick-me-up... a spiritual one, that I knew would feed the rest of my life.

Words inspired from the song lyrics by Jeremy Camp - I Still Believe

I know that even small movement creates momentum and motivation. So after dropping my boys off at their sports practices, I went to the nearby library to read and write.

I sought a spiritual uplift. I wanted a greater connection.

I wanted to shift my focus, my feelings, and my energy. With my scriptures in hand, along with my book of hand-drawn spiritual promises, I sat down and said a silent prayer. Then I randomly opened to this page I drew several months ago. It read, "Even When I Don't See, I Still Believe."

I Still Believe

This phrase comes from a song I Still Believe by Jeremy Camp. The entire song is:

The scattered words and empty thoughts

Seem to pour from my heart.

I’ve never felt so torn before

Seems I don’t know where to start

But it’s now that I feel Your grace fall like rain

From every fingertip, washing away my pain.

[Chorus]

‘Cause I still believe in Your faithfulness.

‘Cause I still believe in Your truth.

‘Cause I still believe in Your holy word.

And even when I don’t see, I still believe.

Though the questions still fog up my mind

With promises I still seem to bear.

Well, even when answers slowly unwind

It’s my heart I see you prepare.

[Chorus]

Well, the only place I can go is into Your arms

Where I throw to you my feeble prayers.

Well, in brokenness I can see that this was your will for me

Well, help me to know that You are near.

[Chorus]

‘Cause I still believe. ‘Cause I still believe. ‘Cause I still believe.

I still believe, I still believe, Oh I still believe. I still believe.

I read over the words, “Even when I don’t see I still believe” and remembered the energy I was feeling when I drew the picture. I listened to the music several times thinking about Jesus and imagined asking the Lord to bless my unbelief echoing the words of another dad in Mark 9:24.

But then some words came into my mind that I know were from Jesus. It was Him saying to me these same words. I Still Believe. It was His commitment to me… that no matter what… "I still believe… In You." These words resonated through my body and touched my heart. I was led to different scriptures that both helped me connect with Heaven, but also to get the nourishment and jump start that I needed.

God's of Abundance

I believe in a Savior and in Heavenly Parents who are abundant. They multiply fishes. A single seed multiplies into countless fruit, with even more seeds in each. Their love is never-ending. They send the warmth of the sun to ALL people… no matter what that person is doing or not doing. They love with a love that will not and cannot end. Their love is represented by an evergreen tree that is ever-green, love that is ever-there. We see Their belief through Their faithfulness, Their Truth, Their Holy Word, Their Grace. We see Their love through open arms and in Their presence… No Matter What.

When Moses and the Children of Israel stood before the Red Sea, with Pharaoh’s army behind them, the Lord declared, Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord... go forward (Exodus 14:13-15). Just as the waters opened for them, our Heavenly Parents make a way for us when there seems to be no other way.

A man pleading to Jesus who reaches out with compassion.
"Lord, I Believe; Help Thou My Unbelief

In those moments of fear and uncertainty, Heaven whispers: “Even when you don’t see… still believe… because I still believe in you.”

The Savior’s invitation to the father of the afflicted boy in Mark 9 still rings true today to each of us: “If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.”

I originally wrote these words “Even when I don’t see, I still believe” as a witness to God, angels, and to myself that no matter what is going on in my life… no matter the circumstances… no matter the storms I am facing… and even when I don’t see the hand of God in my life… when things don’t make sense… even when I face trials of every sort… my commitment and my covenant is, I WILL STILL BELIEVE. I still believe. I still believe. I still believe.

These words are a pronouncement of faith and relentless pursuit of a Heavenly relationship. The words represent my faith that I would be blessed and my unbelief strengthened. These words expressed a desire… my request, “I want to yoke myself to you. I want to lift with you.”

I Still Believe In You

But today, several months later, (and when I really needed a spiritual connection) as I read these words they took on a new meaning. I heard the Savior Jesus Christ calling out to me in a gentle and loving manner… voicing His commitment and His covenant to me. It was Him saying, “Even when I don’t see… even when you stray… even when you are less faithful… even when your actions don’t measure up… I STILL BELIEVE. I still believe in you! I will relentlessly pursue after you… I am committed to you. I am here – NO MATTER WHAT!"

Faith is not only about what I believe about or a belief in Jesus. Faith is also what He believes about and in us. Our Heavenly Parents declare, “Thou art my son” or “Thou art my daughter” (Moses 1:4,6). We are created in Their image, with Their divine DNA. We have divine purpose. We have divine potential and access to divine strength. Through the grace of Jesus Christ, we can lift together what we cannot, nor should not, lift alone.

Paul testified, “I can do all things through Christ, which strengtheneth me” (Philippians 4:13).

As we take steps forward, our Heavenly Parents, and Jesus Christ move towards us and with us. They reach out with open arms and endless belief in who we are and in who we are becoming. Even when we don’t see, we believe because They first believed in and loved us (1 John 4).

We've all been in a place where we may ask, "I believe, help Thou my unbelief." The truth is, when you can't see the way forward, Jesus Christ and our Heavenly Parents don't just believe in you... They walk beside you.

Faith isn't about perfect clarity; it's about trusting in the goodness of Heaven, even when you can't see the outcome. Faith is about trusting that Heaven still believes, and will always believe in you, even... and perhaps especially when we're struggling to believe in Them.

So today, let your faith speak louder than what you see. Trust that even in the fog of weary days and heavy hearts, when you feel distant or even lost... God is already working the miracles that you need. Believe not only in Their goodness, but in Their unwavering belief and commitment in you. Then take one small step... however small, in the direction of hope. As you do, you'll feel Their power strengthen, heal, or uplift you. You will feel Their grace steady you, welcoming you home.

Even when you don't see, still believe... for They believe in you, now and always.

Invitation

  • Today, take one small step of faith... even if you don't see the whole path. Pray, act, or reach out in trust. Have confidence and allow your heart to declare... "I still believe... help mine unbelief."

  • Pause and ask yourself: "What do my Heavenly Parents and Jesus believe I can do today?" Take some time today to be quiet. Imagine taking the weights you bear and putting them on a shelf... just like you would a library book. Then listen and see what thoughts and feelings come into your heart and mind.

  • If these words spoke to your heart, share them with someone who needs the reminder that God still believes in them... and will always believe in them. Your step of faith might be the light they're praying for.
